CLEAN COOKSTOVES

In collaboration with the local Water and Energy Office, WEEMA trained 58 potters how to make "clean cookstoves" out of local materials.

“Clean cookstoves” more efficiently burn fuel and significantly decrease exposure to smoke and air pollutants. The Ethiopian government has determined these stoves as essential for sustainable development.

BEEKEEPING

WEEMA has trained 135 beekeepers on modern beekeeping methods and supported them to establish five cooperatives.

Ethiopia has a long tradition of beekeeping and is ideally suited for apiculture due to its ecology.  It is estimated that one million rural households participate in beekeeping activities.  Many Ethiopian beekeepers rely on indigenous knowledge passed from one generation to the next, and modernizing the technology and marketing used in the apiculture sector has enormous potential to benefit farmers, traders, processors and exporters.
