Using mobile phones to keep kids healthy

Hold the phone… for your health!

WEEMA is collaborating with D-Tree International to design a phone-based app that aims to increase health for kids five and younger. The app will serve as a decision-making tool and assist Health Extension Workers (HEWs) in Ethiopia with their diagnoses of childhood diseases.

The process is simple: plug in the symptoms, enter immunization records and other details and you receive suggested diagnoses and treatments from the Ministry of Health.  The goal of the app is to address the under-5 child mortality rate.

WEEMA midwives and other regional healthcare professionals were “appy” to try out the current draft of the app on their mobile phones and offer suggestions at a workshop in January. Overall, it was an exciting day testing a new tech resource to improve healthcare for kids!
